Innovation in the medical technology space is a complex dance between risk and reward. In the latest episode of MedTech Snapshot, Stan Rowe, CEO of Nidus Biomedical, shares invaluable insights into this delicate balancing act. Innovation in MedTech rarely follows a straight line. Some projects take off quickly. Others stall. And some never make it out of the gate. Knowing the difference, and acting on it, is one of the hardest parts of leadership. Stan has lived on both sides of the innovation spectrum. On one end are build-to-buy projects. These tend to be lower risk, driven by a defined strategic need, and essential for keeping a business operational day to day. On the other end are the swing-for-the-fences efforts. Breakthrough technologies. Big ideas. High uncertainty. Both matter. Both are necessary. But they come with very different challenges. One of the most important points Stan makes is about knowing when a project simply is not going to work. Not because the team failed. Not because the effort wasn’t there. But because the data, the feasibility, or the market reality says it is time to stop. That decision is rarely easy. Project teams almost never walk into a room and say, “This isn’t going to work.” Leaders have to be willing to step in, make the call, and stand behind it. That requires humility, clarity, and a culture that understands failure is sometimes part of the process. Stan also highlights something many organizations struggle with. If you cannot shut down projects, you cannot truly innovate. Resources get stuck. Teams burn out. Better opportunities never get the attention they deserve. The companies that do this well create environments where teams are supported even when a project ends. Where people understand that stopping work does not equal failure. It means learning, redirecting, and trying again with better information. That mindset is what allows innovation to continue. Looking for more support?
