Careers often feel predictable. You work hard, you perform well, and you expect the next opportunity to follow. Until one day, it doesn’t. For Ramin Mousavi, that moment came after years of success inside a large strategic organization. “For the first time in my career, I experienced not getting an opportunity that I wanted,” he said. It was unfamiliar territory. Up until that point, things had largely gone according to plan. “I didn’t know how to process that,” he admitted. “Because that never happened to me through my career.” What made the moment so impactful wasn’t just the outcome. It was the uncertainty that came with it. “When you’re making a decision, you’re not sure,” he said. “If you’re sure about it, it’s not the moment you’re describing.” A Forced Decision That experience forced a realization. He could accept that this might happen again, or he could take control of his own path. “I was forced to make a decision,” he said. “If you were not willing to make a bet on me, I want to make a bet on myself.” It sounds decisive in hindsight. At the time, it was anything but. “It was a terrifying decision,” he said. In fact, the emotional weight of that choice hit immediately. “The only time I experienced a panic attack was the day that I left that job,” he shared. “When I got in the car… it was this overwhelming ‘Oh my God, what did I do?’” Not a Straight Line The decision to bet on himself didn’t lead to immediate success. “It’s not like it was a straight line,” Ramin said. In fact, there was failure along the way. “We fully failed once before we got this thing back up and running.” That part of the story is easy to overlook, but it’s often the reality for founders and leaders who step into the unknown. A Different Perspective Looking back, his perspective on that original moment has completely changed. “I was really mad when I didn’t get that job,” he said. Now? “I am incredibly grateful to the person who didn’t give me that job.” Because without that setback, the path forward would have looked very different. “If he did, I would not be where I am today.” The Takeaway Career-defining moments rarely feel comfortable. They come with uncertainty, anxiety, and sometimes even fear, but those are often the moments that force change. “Life presents you with the unknown,” Ramin said. And when it does, his advice is simple: “Even though you cannot guarantee the outcome… betting on yourself is always the best bet you can make.” Looking for more support?
