For Torry Lamp and Kip Sullivan, the story of how they got to where they are today begins long before they became the leaders of RKL Technologies, an advanced machine shop specializing in medical device components. It begins with their time in the Army, where they met and became what they called "battle buddies." For Torry, serving in the Army changed the way he looked at the world. Being exposed to different countries, different living conditions, and experiences far removed from everyday life in Southern California gave him a different perspective on what mattered. Coming home and reconnecting with his family helped clarify what happiness meant to him. But there was another lesson that stayed with him: the importance of having people around you who understand what you're going through. As Torry explained, many people leave the military and suddenly find themselves without the built-in support system they had before. The transition can be difficult, particularly when there isn't someone you can call who understands the experiences you've shared. That was different for Torry and Kip. They had each other. "We've always said year over year, having each other has gotten us to where we are today," Torry said. That idea extends well beyond the military. Careers can be isolating, particularly when you're running a company or navigating a difficult period of growth. Having someone you trust, someone who can challenge you, listen to you, or simply understand what you're dealing with can make a significant difference. From Battle Buddies to Business Partners Eventually, the two found their way into the manufacturing world and ultimately became the owners of RKL Technologies. Their backgrounds took them through different experiences along the way, but their relationship remained constant. Today, that partnership is visible throughout the company. When Travis visited RKL's facility, he noticed something that stood out immediately. The two leaders knew their employees. The shop was exceptionally clean. And the team wasn't afraid to invest in new technology. Robotics and automation were part of the conversation, not simply because they were new or interesting, but because the technology could help the company become more efficient while maintaining the quality of the parts it produces. That combination says something about the way Torry and Kip approach the business. They're willing to look forward without losing sight of the fundamentals. The People Behind the Business It's easy to talk about a company in terms of its equipment, capabilities, certifications, or technology, but companies are ultimately built by people. In RKL's case, the partnership between two longtime friends is part of the company's story. The experiences they shared before becoming business owners helped shape the way they think about work, relationships, and what they want to build. And perhaps that's the bigger lesson from their conversation. Career paths rarely unfold exactly as planned. Sometimes a pivotal experience changes your perspective. Sometimes a person you meet early in your career becomes someone you rely on decades later. Sometimes the relationship that helped you through one chapter becomes the partnership that helps you build the next one. You don't always know which moments will matter most while you're living them, but you can pay attention to the people around you, and when you find the right ones, hold onto them.
